About the Book
We made this mess.
I believe our focus on negativity makes many of us think workers are lazy and opportunistic. I think that starting with the middle-management purge in corporate America in the 1980’s, and continuing with the constant down-sizing, right-sizing, and treating employees like “human capital” for the sake of profit, makes workers think companies are greedy and unfair.
I have an even deeper belief that every single team member just wants to know what’s expected of them, to be shown how to do it, and wants to do the best job they can.
How about we try something different? Let’s commit to Never Fire Anyone.
We need to lose our impatience when instant results and profits don’t materialize. Gain invincible trust through empathy and candor. Take the time to train and invest towards mutual success. Don’t terminate, but take the value-based progressive-discipline model in my book. Use the strong relationships you’ve built to maximize your team’s performance, root out those who aren’t on the same page, give them a chance to course correct and experience great turnaround stories. Or, they will self-select out of the organization.
Either way, problem solved.
